Befriending- Befriender for Older People (Age Concern)

Description Volunteer Befriender for Age Concern To meet with the befriendee on a regular and agreed basis. It is essential that befrienders consciously undertake a commitment: To be reliable To be consistent To maintain confidentiality To give the co-ordinator advance notice of any cancelled or rearranged visits To clarify any issues that arise with the co-ordinator To monitor and feedback regularly on progress and any concerns relating to the client Be willing to undertake induction training, work to guidelines and adhere to all policies and procedures Tasks of Befrienders These can be many, varied and complex. Every befriending relationship is unique depending on the personalities of the people involved. In general, a good foundation to all befriending is to: Build a good relationship Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries within the befriending relationship Be accepting, understanding and non-judgmental Be willing were appropriate to undertake some active befriending which may include taking an older person out for a walk, take them to appointments, take them to activities, go out for coffee and so on. A full induction and training will be provided to all volunteer befrienders. Age Concern Causeway will repay any agreed expenses (bus fares, meals etc) on production of receipts paid out in the course of volunteering, so that you are not out of pocket. Travel expenses will be paid on a mileage basis for all authorised journeys undertaken.
