Description

Praxis Care

Befriending Volunteer

Praxis Care is a major provider of services for adults and children with a learning disability, mental ill health, acquired brain injury and for older people, including people with dementia.

The Praxis Befriending Scheme matches volunteers with people who are suffering from or are in danger of developing mental ill health. Befriending Volunteers help to reduce the social isolation people can experience due to their mental ill health by providing companionship and social support, thereby developing social networks and occasional practical support. Volunteers build friendships which have a lasting positive impact on both themselves and the people they befriend.

Befrienders get involved with everyday activities with their Praxis Care friend:

  • Going for a walk

  • Meeting for a coffee

  • Going to the cinema or a local event

  • Shopping

  • Playing sport

Additional:

  • The volunteer usually meets once a week, for approx 2-4 hours, with their friend and engage in a range of social activities, promoting self confidence  and independence for their new friend.

  • Volunteers commit to at least 6 months with their friend.

  • All Praxis Care volunteers will be trained and supported to complete their roles.

A small amount of time could make a huge difference!
