Home Start Causeway


Home-Start Causeway is a volunteer organisation which provides practical and emotional support to families with at least one child under 5 years, who are experiencing difficulties such as isolation, disability, illness or multiple births. We have a team of over 30 volunteers who provide home visiting and group support to families. A volunteer is individually matched with a specific family and provides support on a weekly basis in the family home as required.

Role Description:

The overall role of a treasurer is to:

  • Maintain an overview of the scheme's affairs
  • Ensure its financial viability
  • Ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained
  • Additional general responsibilities as a trustee

Duties as a treasurer:

  • Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements
  • Being assured that the financial resources of the scheme meet its present and future needs
  • Ensuring that the scheme has an appropriate reserves policy
  • The preparation and presentation of financial reports to the board
  • Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
  • Liaising with any paid staff and volunteers about financial matters
  • Advising on the financial implications of the scheme's strategic plans
  • Ensuring that the scheme has an appropriate investment policy
  • Ensuring that there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of the charity
  • Monitoring the scheme's investment activity and ensuring its consistency with the organisation's policies and legal responsibilities
  • Ensuring the scheme's compliance with legislation
  • Ensuring equipment and assets are adequately maintained and insured
  • Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies i.e. The Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies
  • Where external scrutiny of accounts is required, ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required (independent examination or audit) and any recommendations are implemented
  • Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the scheme
  • Making a formal presentation  of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Previous financial experience
  • Experience of charity accounts, or fundraising or grant application experience desirable
  • Enthusiasm is essential


  • Days/Time required: Up to 10 hours per month( to include up to 7 hours personal preparation time, and 3 hours Management Committee meeting,( currently Tuesday mornings)
  • Location: Coleraine
  • Induction pack and ongoing training as required are provided
  • Volunteer expenses are covered
