SHORT TERM VOLUNTEERS

General skills,expectations and information

Short-Term Volunteers come to the centre on a regular basis to provide additional support at weekends and busy midweeks. The following role description outlines the tasks that Short-Term Volunteers can typically expect to do at Corrymeela.

Role Purpose:

The role of the Short-Term Volunteer at Corrymeela is to support and assist staff and Long-Term Volunteers at the Ballycastle Centre in the practical tasks and responsibilities inherent in welcoming and hosting the groups who visit the centre. Volunteers also support the work of the housekeeping, kitchen, receptions, administration, marketing, fundraising, finance, gardening, maintenance, bus driving (D1 license holders only), all of which are vital to the functioning of the centre and groups’ residential experience.

Expectation: We expect volunteers to participate in and creatively contribute to the rhythm of life at the centre. Volunteer support is provided and includes specific in role training. Volunteers are expected to have a friendly manner, to respect their colleague volunteers, staff and visitors, to act according to the values and policies of Corrymeela and to be reliable and trustworthy.

Skills / Qualities

Short-Term Volunteers should ideally have:

• Good communication and people skills
• A high energy level
• Ability to work under pressure
• Flexibility
• A willingness to learn new skills
• Sense of humour
• Reliable and trustworthy

OTHER INFORMATION:
Food and Accommodation All meals are provided for volunteers at the centre. Accommodation for volunteers is provided (usually) on-site in the Coventry Building. Short-Term Volunteers will share a bedroom with 1 other volunteer (except in exceptional circumstances) and will share bathroom facilities with 4 other volunteers. The Coventry Building also contains shared facilities, namely a kitchen, dining area, TV lounge, computer suite, training room and telephone room.

Training and development

All volunteers will be given the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge base by participating in training events relevant to their role or their personal development plan. Corrymeela will provide training including: hospitality, protection of children and vulnerable adults, diversity and different abilities and other relevant topics. Short-Term Volunteers are also invited to participate in some training events for the Long-Term volunteers, such as training on facilitation, group work and leadership skills, as well as experiential training in the main areas of work within the centre. Reimbursement Reasonable travel expenses up to a return journey limit of 15 will be made when arranged in advance with the Logistic Support Worker.

Support for Volunteers

Short-Term Volunteers are provided with a range of measures to support them. The support comes from line management and colleague volunteers. Line Managers will meet with Short-Term volunteers on a regular basis during their time at the centre to offer feedback and to set goals.

Fire Cover

All volunteers will be trained in emergency evacuation procedures – how to respond to the fire alarm sounding and how to assist the Cover person (on site duty manager) with the safe evacuation of guests from the units. When on duty, volunteers will be on 24 hour fire cover and must therefore refrain from alcohol at all times. Any reasonable requests to be off Fire Cover should be directed to the Cover person on duty. As the safety of our guests is both a statutory duty and also part of our ethos, volunteers should note that the Cover person will often be unable to grant a request to be off Fire Cover.

Data Protection

As a volunteer your personal details will be treated a strictly confidential, in line with relevant data protection legislation.

Long-Term and Mid-Term Volunteers

In addition to Short-Term volunteers, the centre depends upon the support of Long-Term Volunteers and Mid-Term Volunteers. Long-Term Volunteers normally spend one year living and working at the centre. Long-Term Volunteers contribute immensely to the work at the centre and we rely heavily on their support and contributions. Mid-Term Volunteers normally three months living and working at the centre. They become fully integrated into the volunteer team and participate in all aspects of training and community building.
