Staying Connected Befriender(Arthritis Care)

Background: Staying Connected will work with isolated older people living with arthritis and other long term health conditions to help them learn skills to manage their condition and support them to re-engage with community life. It also aims to help carers to cope better with the demands of their caring role. Overview of the role: Arthritis Care is training volunteers to become befriender/mentors. As a trained befriender/mentor your skills, personality and location will be matched appropriately to an individual or group. Key Responsibilities: • Provide references and undertake an enhanced disclosure check(Assess NI) • Being available to volunteer for a minimum of two hours a week for one year • Building a sensitive and caring relationship with beneficiaries • Spending time with beneficiaries and engaging in activities that are mutually agreed upon • Being understanding rather than judgemental about a person’s situation or circumstances • Respecting the confidentiality of the beneficiaries at all times • Establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries • Attending induction training and participating in ongoing training activities/monthly networking meetings • Participate in regular supervision/support meetings with the befriending/mentoring project manager in order to offer support and guidance to exchange information regarding beneficiaries and address any concerns (Additional email/phone support will also be provided) • Participate in the evaluation of the project • Informing the befriending/mentoring project manager of any concerns about the beneficiaries Person Specification: • Ability to commit to the project for a minimum of one year after training • Ability to communicate clearly • To be reliable and keep all commitments or appointments with beneficiaries • Ability to maintain boundaries and confidentially • Ability to share skills, interests or activities with beneficiaries • Willingness to complete project administration • Willingness to participate in monitoring and evaluation processes of the project as required
