Breastfeeding Support Volunteer (NHSCT)

Role Description:

  • These volunteers are experienced breastfeeding mothers, who will provide additional information and support to other breastfeeding mothers within their own communities. This role offers the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification. 
  • To offer encouragement, support and appropriate advice to mothers who wish to or who are breastfeeding their babies.
  • To offer relevant information to mothers in order to support the commencement and continuation of breastfeeding
  • To signpost mothers to local support networks and statutory services
  • To attend appropriate training which will enhance their current experience, knowledge and skills in identifying breastfeeding problems and ensure they are aware of who to report to if problems arise
  • To offer the unique understanding and empathy of having been a breastfeeding mother themselves

Time commitment: Flexible over a month

Areas/facilities that the volunteer will be expected to be:

  • Health centres
  • Community facilities
  • Maternity ward
  • Volunteer’s own home ( to provide telephone support service) (NHSCT breastfeeding support volunteers do not currently visit mothers in their own home)

Skills required:

  •  Breastfed her own baby for at least 4-6 months
  •  Excellent communication skills
  •  Comfortable in group settings
  •  An understanding of the information and support needs of new mothers learning to breastfeed

You will receive:

  • Attend the local introductory breastfeeding programme accredited to Open College Network for 8-10 weeks (meets UNICEF Baby Friendly standard)
  • NHSCT volunteer induction
  • Safeguarding Children Awareness session
  • Infection control
  • Fire safety training
  • UNICEF Baby Friendly training updates when necessary
