Why we want you
Spring Watch and Raptor Camp are key activities, which deal with the most serious threat to birds on the Maltese Islands - hunting and trapping. As a result, good communications are essential to keep audiences informed and aware of the event's progression and key issues. With more human resources the communications plan can be more far and wide reaching.
What’s in it for you?
The opportunity to contribute to a major initiative to reduce illegal hunting in Malta and really make a difference to bird conservation in the Islands and Europe. You will also have a chance to get out in the field, see some fantastic birds, get experience with undertaking wildlife surveys and gathering material for media releases. There may also be office-based work with different types of media that target different audiences. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow birdwatchers from all over Europe.
The skills you need
Both Spring Watch and Raptor Camp are held annually in Malta to monitor migration and prevent illegal shooting of protected species. Volunteers take up positions at various watch points around Malta and Gozo and camps have been very successful in reducing the amount of illegal hunting. Volunteers are required to have good bird ID skills, or be willing and enthusiastic to learn. Also an attention to detail for accurate data recording is essential. BirdLife Malta requires a communications professional to help with footage and image gathering and editing, update the BirdLife Malta web site, organise press conferences and write material for the website, press releases or feature articles.
