| About this place | Some people call it a beach but here at Portstewart we call it a 'strand'. The fine golden sand stretches for 2 miles (3.2km). The dunes behind the strand are a haven for wild flowers and butterflies. Formed around 6,000 years ago, you can find dunes up to 98 feet (30m) high. Enjoy a quiet break from the busy beach and watch fisherman going up and down the River Bann. The saltmarsh is a haven for different flora and fauna than the dunes. There's something to see whatever the season. Whales, dolphins and seals can be seen from the beach. It's a great place to volunteer! |
| Role summary | Help us to protect this special place and safeguard the future of Portstewart Strand by joining the team as a Beach - Clean and Monitoring Volunteer |
| What's involved? | Keeping our beach clean and safe for visitors and wildlife through littler picks, bin emptying and monitoring Working alone or in a group, clearing litter from an area agreed with the Duty Manager Being able to identify dangerous items of litter and communicating with the team where they have been discovered Collecting and capturing data to help monitor key areas and incidents around the site e.g. litter, fly tip, dog waste etc. Highlighting successes and concerns to the team Being part of a team that may need to adapt and change in response to local needs and National Trust priorities. • Helping each visitor feel welcome and making suggestions so they have a safe and enjoyable day • Sharing what’s great about Portstewart Strand and helping people understand why we need to take care of special places • Helping to conserve and protect Portstewart Strand • Making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures |
